Dr. Hema has been associated with various academic institutes throughout her career and has undertaken many collaborative projects.

Dr. Hema gets invited by medical associations working for Assisted Reproduction to actively participate in the conferences with an aim to enlighten the members on the genetics of male and female fertility.

Her lectures to Paediatric Associations increased their awareness of treatable metabolic disorders in new-born screening. She was invited to give a talk to paediatric surgeons as genetics play an important role in surgical conditions as well.

The most common genetic conditions like Thalassemia and Sickle cell are affecting 3 to 5,00,000 Indian babies yearly. To reduce the burden,

  • Her input into Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Society of India’s (FOGSI tog decision tree conclave feb, 2018) guidelines on the importance of carrier detection, genetic counselling and prenatal diagnosis for Thalassemia has been incorporated.
  • Specific importance of pedigree charting - family history of obstetric patients in FOGSI ISPAT CME 2018 was also explained by her.

Because of her proficiency, the scientific review committee of ICMR-NIRRCH Mumbai has invited her to critically evaluate the new three years training / research proposals Research for the Government of India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on:

  • Identification and evaluation of novel metabolites with the potential of prenatal diagnosis of fetal congenital heart diseases
  • Validation of New-Born screening in the detection of Inborn Errors of Metabolism and Endocrinologic Diseases to be submitted to the Institutional Ethics committee.
  • She is invited as a visiting faculty as well by ICMR - NIRRCH.

Many obstetricians trained by her are guiding their patients in various states and are able to collect and courier the samples to genetic labs thereby sparing the patient and their family the botheration of a trip. Alumni of science branch in leading institutional laboratories across India and working worldwide.

She is a visiting faculty for the Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities (Divyangjan), Mumbai, post-graduate audiologist course.

Formulates and participates in webinars on the detection and prevention of genetic diseases as well as on the occasion like World Birth Defects Day that are hosted by reputable pharmaceutical firms.

Served as a Visiting Faculty for Postgraduates in nutrigenomics course at Institute of Chemical Technology (UDCT) in Mumbai.

In order to formulate the super specialised postgraduate course in DM - medical genetics for the National Medical Commission, Dr. Hema has been instrumental in providing input to the evaluating committee.

Almost all medical specialties have taken cognizance of the genetic segment and included the subject in their conferences and practice and invite Dr. Hema to guide their members.

Plants and Veterinary Genetics :

  • Dr. Hema’s love for plants led her to a course in plant tissue culture. Such plants are healthier and are cultivated in minimum space in tubes saving acres of land.
  • She Provided on request guidance in establishment of a cytogenetic lab at the Govt Bombay Veterinary College and mentored its postgraduate students.
  • In dairy farming, employing a bull's sperm that has chromosomal translocation-type defects could result in significant financial losses from infertility, subfertility, or pregnancy loss in the cows. Hence, she was consulted by the dairies like Chitale from Maharashtra and Kamdhenu university, Anand from Gujarat catering to prestigious dairies.
  • Doctor was also approached by Agra Bear Rescue Institute for chromosomal studies of bears for its taxonomy project.
